Inclusion is a concept that holds different meaning for different people. For Kayla, it means being part of a community where she feels accepted, included, and happy. Kayla has discovered the power of inclusion through her participation in SASA special Hockey, being a member of the CVU Field Hockey team, participating in Girls 4 Hockey, and through the CVU Unified class. These opportunities provide her with a sense of belonging and acceptance, as she has the chance to interact with her peers and be part of a team. Additionally, her involvement with the UVM Women’s hockey team further contributes to her feeling included, as she attends games and cheers on her favorite players.
Kayla’s journey towards belonging took a turn when she made a connection with Courtney Barrett, the coach of the South Burlington Girls Hockey team. Courtney welcomed Kayla with open arms, and Kayla became an avid supporter of the team. Attending their games and practices, she felt like an important part of the community, as her presence was valued and appreciated.
Over the course of four years, Kayla has become an integral part of the South Burlington Wolves. She has formed connections with the players, engaging with them through conversations and expressing her support with high fives. Recently, Kayla received a new opportunity to attend practice and skate with the team once a week, solidifying her sense of inclusion and connection with the team.
Leadership plays a crucial role in fostering kindness and acceptance within a team. Courtney and her coaching staff have been instrumental in creating an inclusive environment for Kayla. Their leadership has made it possible for Kayla to participate in an alumni game, where she was readily accepted as a teammate, reinforcing the power of true inclusion.
Kayla’s journey to finding a sense of belonging through inclusion highlights the transformative power of acceptance and community. The connections and opportunities she has experienced through her involvement in sports have given her a platform to be seen and valued. This serves as a reminder of the importance of cultivating an inclusive environment where everyone feels accepted and embraced for who they are. Inclusion is not just a concept, it is demonstrated through actions and acceptance.
