Over 20 years ago, I was hired to help a grandmother watch her grandchildren during the summer. She played tennis, ran, was an avid gardener, sang at her community church, and, four days of the week, she took care of five of her grandchildren, all of whom were under the age of 5. Needless to say, she had the day scheduled down to the minute, and her grandchildren knew what to expect at every moment.
I learned a tremendous amount during that summer. I learned how structure, routine, and consistency were vital in children’s lives. I learned how to appreciate the outdoors: whether going for walks, tending to the garden, or playing games, children thrive in the outdoors. But what I gained most from that experience was an understanding of the love that she had for her husband, her children, and her grandchildren. I learned the importance of family.
This inspirational woman always spoke so highly of her children, grandchildren, and husband. No matter their struggles, she was there for them, supporting them through the years. I vaguely recall her mentioning another grandchild who lived in the area who had some developmental disabilities. Regardless of her granddaughter’s struggles, she always supported her, spoke highly of her, and loved spending time with her. This overpowering love was seen in every member of this family. This was one of the most friendly, generous, modest, and loving families that I have ever come across.
Fast forward 20+ years and here I am running a non-profit and trying to get sponsorships for our first annual Kayla’s Kickoff. I realize that I need to find companies that understand the impact on families of having a child with special needs. Companies that get that these families need as much support as they can get. Companies that value inclusion, community support, and acceptance of differences. It is with great honor that I announce that Vermont Systems, based in Essex, is sponsoring Kayla’s Kickoff!
Vermont Systems was founded by Robert Willey, the incredible husband of the grandmother I helped over 20 years ago. Robert Willey works alongside his three children, Giles, Kate, and Laurie at Vermont Systems along with numerous other relatives, including a couple of the aforementioned grandchildren! Although Vermont Systems is, of course, not entirely staffed by the Willey family, I am sure that the core values, friendliness, generosity, and dedication there is very similar to what I experienced when I helped watch five grandchildren at the Willey house. Now more than ever, having a child with special needs of my own, their values and family strength have truly resonated with me throughout the years.
