Gonzo’s in South Burlington originally opened as a virtual reality golf place. I envisioned a bunch of guys drinking beer, playing golf, and watching tv- not too high on my places to visit. Over the years they have added more virtual sports, and they recently added some sort of skiing machine. Okay, so skiing in a warm room intrigued me for about 5 seconds, but the idea of virtual games had never interested me. It reminds me of playing the WII, which I dislike.
Over vacation we received an invite from the Westbrook family to go to Gonzo’s for two hours. Kelcie, our oldest daughter, was psyched to go play at Gonzo’s with her father and the Westbrook clan. I, on the other hand, decided that there was nothing for Kayla to do there so we would stay home.
I did a little research about Gonzo’s the day we were suppose to go. I learned about their games and the general atmosphere of the place. I also found out that the Westbrooks’ 6 year old was going with a friend. So I took the plunge; I loaded Kayla in the car and off to Gonzo’s we went. Of course I packed her headphones to reduce the sound and/or chaos we were about to endure!
Our first stop was the shuffleboard game where Kayla had to learn how to gentle push the discs so they would stay on the board. Our next stop was the virtual sports field. Kayla visited the field with two 6 year olds. Kayla tried soccer, dodgeball, basketball, and of course, she had to play hockey. She tried all of these activities, even though she has a cast on one leg and a brace on the other. She was not scared, never disappointed, and was determined to score in soccer. She ventured to the beverage cooler and candy counter, grabbed her items, and let the cashier know that she should “put it on the tab.” Kayla helped herself to the free popcorn, sat down, and watched the older kids play while she provided a running commentary. Total independence! And no headphones!
The one thing that I admire about Kayla is her confidence. Although it is sometimes hard for me to see that she is developmentally below her peers, Kayla is always happy. It is wonderful to see her go out and do the best that she can. Because in her world, she is a fast runner, skilled soccer player, and a good basketball player. Kayla even thinks she is a great hockey player, even though she has never skated. Two hours later we were headed out the door, smiling, with our bellys full, and full of confidence (Kayla that is)!
We will definitely be going back! This is not only a great place to have fun, but it’s a great place to work on Kayla’s gross motor skills. I think I will contacting her PT to meet at Gonzo’s for the next session!
