We just had another Boston trip for a re-check of Kayla’s ankle. However, this time I also scheduled our older daughter, Kelcie, for a follow-up with her orthopedic doctor regarding a torn labrum. Kayla’s appointment was scheduled for 9:00 a.m. in Waltham, and Kelcie was scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Boston. “Perfect,” I thought, a little time to grab some lunch at one of their favorite restaurants, Wasabi.
We headed to Boston in the pouring rain on Sunday afternoon, after sitting on the deck of a hot pool and watching 3 hours of Kelcie’s swim meet. Kayla opted not to watch her sister swim because the atmosphere is loud and crowded. Kayla stood in the hallway of the building, patiently waiting for her sister to finish up. We made it all the way to Waltham with no stopping! We checked into the hotel and had a decent dinner. As I unpacked the bags, I realized that I didn’t pack Kayla’s night time medication . . . big mistake! She wasn’t able to fall asleep until after 11:00 p.m. Both Kelcie and I realized that the next day was going to be a challenge.
Fortunately, I was able to squeeze in a long run before the crazy day that was ahead for us. Our first stop was Waltham, where Kayla did an amazing job while getting her cast off and having more x-rays. It was not so good when the doctors were trying to figure out her next treatment. Kayla has a very difficult time transitioning out of casts and is hypersensitive to different sensations. Because her ankle was still very swollen, a walking boot was ordered and the screaming began! Poor Kelcie could hear her sister way out in the waiting room telling the staff that it hurt, not to touch her, and she wasn’t going to walk. Good lord, and it was only 9:30 in the morning!
After a little tough love and some patience, we made it to the car and were on our way to the Natick Galleria to meet up with my brother and go to Wasabi for lunch. Wasabi is restaurant where sushi plates go on a belt past your table. You take off whatever sushi you want and eat away. It entertains Kayla because there is so much to chose from and she can sit and take what she wants to eat. She also orders the kid menu which comes in a nifty little bento box and has cool chopsticks. (We have purchased several of these boxes.) Bellies full, we were able to get out of the restaurant without any tantrums or disruptions!
Kelcie’s appointment went off without a hitch. But then, we had the long ride home with Kayla, who had reached her point of exhaustion. The three tantrums and food demands from the back seat were more draining than driving in the white-out conditions which we encountered. As I looked over in the passenger seat, Kelcie just plugged in her earphones and zoned out. It was a very smart move on her part, and I wished I were in that passenger seat!
